Picking your cavy
I do not advise going into a pet shop. Some of the time the sows end up pregnant which is not a good idea for your first cavy, and some of the time they do not sex them right, so you could end up with a boar and a sow!

Reascues and shelters are really good, it gives a lonley un-wanted cavy a second chace at life.

Breeders are also really good, you can get pets and pure breds from different kinds of breeders.

ANY where you go you should always check the cavy is healthy, look for the following things, this is when you should NOT buy the cavy:

Dull coat
mits
broken skin
scaps
cuts
not bright eyed
very lazy/not moving much
broken teeth

Never buy a cavy under the age of 6 weeks. Breeders usally let there pups go at 6-8 weeks of age.

If you buy a cavy for the first time then always buy 2 cavies, they will get very lonley on there own and NEVER house them with rabbits.

Most cavies will be scared during the first few days of them being in a new home, so try not to make loud sounds or sudden movments around them. Soon they will settle then you will be able to handle and play with them.

NOTE: all cavies have a bald spot behind there ears.
